The geographical variety of the continent - from the mountains and the vast desert of the north to the wide Savannah belt, the central rain forests and the fertile southern coast - is reflected in a multiplicity of musical styles.

The two quakes struck close together in Africa's Great Lakes region along the western Great Rift Valley fault.

The first quake, with a magnitude of 6.0 and its epicentre in Democratic Republic of Congo, happened at 10:30 a.m. (0730 GMT), followed by another 5.0 quake in densely populated southern Rwanda at 1:56 p.m. (1056 GMT).

"The death toll (in Rwanda) has risen to 33 people and up to 400 are seriously injured," Deputy Rwandan Police Chief Mary Gahonzire told Reuters. She said rescue efforts were underway.

The acting governor of Congo's South Kivu province, Bernard Watunakanza, told Reuters by telephone from the eastern town of Bukavu that aftershocks were happening "every 20 or 30 minutes".

"Up to now there are five dead and 149 seriously injured. Many people are traumatised," he said.

Witnesses to the Congo quake told of scenes of panic.

"It was a fear that I cannot even explain. We thought we were already dead," said Bukavu resident Jacqueline Hachez.

"We have never seen a quake like that here before. Part of my house is on the verge of falling into the lake (Kivu)."

An official from Congo's U.N. peacekeeping mission, known as MONUC, said buildings had been destroyed in Bukavu.

"There is lots of damage. Many buildings have been hit. Lots of houses have completely collapsed," said spokeswoman Jacqueline Chenard.

Earthquakes are common in the western Great Rift Valley -- a seismically active fault line straddling western Uganda, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and neighbouring Tanzania.

In 1994, a magnitude 6 tremor in the foothills of western Uganda's Rwenzori mountains killed at least six people. In 1966, a magnitude 7 earthquake killed 157 people and injured more than 1,300 in the Semliki Valley, also in western Uganda.

President Francois Bozize has appointed the rector of the University of Bangui as premier. Faustin Archange Touadera will succeed PM Elie Dote who tendered the resignation of his cabinet last week. Touadera has been ordered to form a new cabinet to address the social crisis in the CAR. Government workers and teachers have been on strike since early this year to force the government to pay their back wages. Despite the change in government, the unions called for a national protest Jan. 23 and a general strike Jan. 24. Bozize has threatened to use violence if necessary to suppress the protests.
Congo (DRC)

World Bank forestry projects in the Congo (DRC) ignored the rights of indigenous pygmies and overestimated the benefits of industrial logging in reducing poverty, the bank itself said in a report that concluded internal guidelines had been breached. The report followed complaints by indigenous pygmy groups that the reforms had disregarded the rights of millions of forest-dependent people and ignored the existence of between 250,000 and 600,000 pygmies whose lives depend on the forests. The reforms, the complainants argued, would also lead to violations of their rights to occupy ancestral lands, and use their forests according to traditional practices. (IRIN)

Ethiopia

UN peacekeepers monitoring the disputed border between Ethiopia and Eritrea may have to halt operations within weeks because Eritrea has cut diesel fuel supplies, said UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. Ban said that as a result of the Dec. 1 stoppage, the mission had only enough fuel to last until early March. Ban called on Afwerki to address the issue "on an urgent basis," otherwise a U.N. decision would have to be taken in early February to begin withdrawing the 1,700-strong United Nations Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea (UNMEE). (Reuters)

Kenya

Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga has said for the first time that he is prepared to share power. On the German television station ARD, he says President Mwai Kibaki can stay in office as long as an opposition candidate becomes prime minister. Another condition would be a strengthening of parliament and the judiciary. Odinga's comments come as former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan is in Kenya in an attempt to mediate a solution to the crisis. He says people should not expect miracles from his visit. (Radio Netherlands)

Liberia

One of Liberia's most notorious rebel commanders has returned home to confess his crimes, saying his fighters killed 20,000 people during the country's civil war.Joshua Milton Blahyi, also known as General Butt Naked, acknowledges the atrocities in an interview with the Associated Press published this past weekend. Blahyi returned from exile in Ghana to testify before Liberia's Truth and Reconciliation Commission last week. The commission began hearing testimony on the civil war in 2006 with the goal of establishing a full account of wartime atrocities. (VOA)

Mozambique

The World Food Program (WFP) has begun relief flights to central Mozambique, where some 76,000 people have been affected by widespread flooding this month along the Zambezi River valley. A helicopter chartered by the agency flew its first mission yesterday morning, delivering 2.2 tons of mosquito nets, tents and plastic sheeting to the town of Mutarara for use and distribution by UNICEF. The helicopter transported its first consignment of WFP food assistance Jan. 22, carrying 2.5 tons of cereals and pulses to the town of Goligoli, where more than 13,000 people have been displaced from their homes because of floodwaters.
Nigeria

Nigerian authorities are searching for the families of 105 abducted children found packed into a minibus. The children, aged between five and 13, were taken from Kano state in the north and discovered by anti-trafficking agents crammed into a 15-seat bus in the northern city of Kaduna, after the driver was stopped at a police checkpoint. The children were piled on top of each other "like sardines" say officials. It is the largest number of trafficked children the authorities have rescued in one incident since efforts began to stop the trade in 2003. (BBC)

Rwanda

Rwanda has launched a campaign to encourage all men to be circumcised, to reduce the risk of catching HIV/AIDS. A health minister told the BBC that soldiers, policemen and students would be asked to come forward first for circumcision. The U.N. World Health Organization (WHO) has said male circumcision reduces the risk of heterosexual HIV infection. But correspondents say it is rare in Rwanda where the Christian population, who make up the majority, do not practice it. (BBC)

Senegal

Dubai World Group's Jafza subsidiary signed a USD 800 million deal on Jan. 21 to build and run a special economic zone in Senegal, the latest in a series of Arab investments in the West African country. Dubai World Chairman Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem said construction would start before the end of the year on the first phase of the project, covering 650 hectares next to a planned international airport 45 km (28 miles) from Dakar. (Reuters)

Sierra Leone

A newborn in Sierra Leone has the lowest chance in the world of surviving until age 5, and the prospects are almost as bad for children in Angola and Afghanistan, UNICEF said in its annual report. In 2006, nearly 9.7 million children worldwide died before their fifth birthdays, mostly from preventable causes like diarrhea, malaria or malnutrition, it said, and on average more than 26,000 children under age 5 died each day. Sierra Leone had the highest child mortality rate, with 270 deaths per 1,000 births. Angola was second with 260 deaths, followed by Afghanistan with 257. (NY Times)

Sudan

Armed robberies and bandit attacks on aid convoys are threatening deliveries of food to more than 2 million people in Darfur, the World Food Program (WFP) said on Jan. 23. Around two-thirds of the population of Darfur depends on the world's largest aid operation, but a collapse in law and order in the vast region has made life difficult for humanitarian workers. Five years of fighting in Darfur has claimed an estimated 200,000 lives and driven 2.5 million from their homes. WFP officials are calling on the Sudanese government to make sure the roads are safe. (Reuters)

Zambia

Zambia has mobilized its army to clear drainage systems in major cities amid fears torrential rains and flooding may lead to outbreaks of cholera and other deadly diseases, a government official said on Jan 23. Zambia, like Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi, has been lashed by heavy rains for several weeks. Swollen rivers have burst their banks, killing dozens and forcing thousands of villagers to flee flooded homes. Floods also have destroyed bridges and roads and swept away livestock and crops. (Reuters)

Zanzibar

Using a cocktail of drugs may help doctors more effectively treat three of the world's most common parasitic diseases, researchers working in Zanzibar reported on Jan. 23. The drugs treat elephantiasis, soil-transmitted worms and schistomiasis. All the treatments are known to be effective but the impact of delivering them all at once was not known. The WHO has long recommended the coordinated delivery of drugs to tackle neglected tropical diseases, but the number of treatments has so far been limited to two because of safety concerns over potential side-effects. (Reuters)

Zimbabwe

A Zimbabwe court on Jan. 23 upheld a police ban on an opposition demonstration to press President Robert Mugabe to adopt a new constitution ahead of presidential and parliamentary elections scheduled for March. The court ruled they could hold a rally in a stadium, after police had said street protests could turn violent. Police released Zimbabwe's main opposition leader, Morgan Tsvangirai, hours after taking him away in the middle of the night for questioning about the planned demonstration, his lawyer said. His group, the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), launched a legal challenge to the police ban. (Reuters)

Secretary-General Kofi Annan is due to meet Kenya's President Mwai Kibaki on Thursday to try to end a post-election crisis after persuading the opposition to call off further street protests.

Following talks with Annan, the opposition said late on Wednesday it would halt planned demonstrations against Kibaki's disputed December 27 poll victory. Previous protests have ended in rioting and bloody clashes with security forces.

Annan had been due to meet Kibaki on Wednesday, but the Kenyan leader instead met with Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, a close ally also trying to mediate who is one of few African leaders to have congratulated Kibaki on his win.

Officials said Annan would now meet Kibaki on Thursday.

"These things have a tendency to start slowly but now they should start going more quickly," said one diplomat involved in the negotiations, who declined to be named.

Annan held talks with Raila Odinga on Wednesday, the leader of the opposition Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), who says Kibaki stole a vote he narrowly won at the end of last month.

The resulting dispute plunged Kenya into chaos and triggered ethnically-motivated killings, tarnishing the image of a country long seen as among Africa's most stable.

"We believe and hope that (Kofi Annan's mediation team) will have a chance to meet Mr. Kibaki, and ... we should be able to make progress," said one of the ODM's leaders, William Ruto.

More than 650 people have so far died in clashes which continued into Wednesday, when at least two people were killed in violence in a Nairobi slum.

Police dispersed stone-throwing opposition supporters at a funeral on Wednesday to commemorate those shot dead by police in efforts to crush previous demonstrations.

World powers have called on Kibaki and Odinga to hold urgent talks after more than three weeks of unrest and many ordinary Kenyans are disgusted that they have so far failed to do so.

Kenya's newly elected parliament speaker, Kenneth Marende, who also met Annan on Wednesday, said face-to-face discussion between the two rivals was "going to be on the table".

The worst bloodshed was in the huge Kibera slum, an opposition stronghold, where at least seven people were killed and a dozen wounded by police automatic gunfire. The French medical charity MSF called it a "massacre".

Police also opened fire and lobbed tear gas in the port of Mombasa, where one person was killed in protests after Friday Muslim prayers, and the southern town of Narok.

Friday's deaths were the worst toll from three days of protests called by opposition leader Raila Odinga's Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) against Kibaki's re-election.

At least 21 people have been killed in the demonstrations, which were due to end on Friday. About 650 people have been killed since the disputed December 27 election.

The opposition and human rights groups accuse the police of using excessive force and firing indiscriminately at unarmed protesters. Police say they only shoot at rioters and looters.

Reuters journalists counted seven bodies from the Kibera shooting, including a man with the back of his head blown off and 15-year-old girl, Rosina Otieno. Both were carried to the nearby Masaba hospital morgue in a white pickup truck.

Otieno's aunt, Martha Mtishi, told Reuters: "If they can kill a little girl let them kill us all."

At least 11 wounded people were brought to the hospital. "We need more doctors because ... we cannot handle an emergency of this magnitude," hospital administrator Joe Momanyi said.

Outside the hospital a crowd shouted: "Murderers and killers."

A Reuters reporter saw police shooting protesters in Kibera. One man in a red baseball cap and black T-shirt dropped to the ground, blood gushing from his knee.

Protesters built a burning barricade in the slum, and boys hiding in shacks and firing stones from slingshots played a cat-and-mouse game with police.

"They were trying to uproot railway lines. The police came to stop them and started shooting. They started howling and running away," said James Muga, an unemployed 45-year-old as repeated bursts of automatic gunfire rang out.

VIOLENCE SPREADS

In southwest Kenya, officials said five people were killed on Friday in clashes between Kibaki's Kikuyu tribe and Maasai anti-government protesters in Narok town, gateway to the Maasai Mara game reserve.

They were killed with arrows and machetes.

Maasai and Kikuyu had been fighting in the area since Thursday with homes and shops burned and at least 23 wounded, the police said. Riot police had to be sent in to clear barricades erected by Maasais, a Reuters journalist said.

The opposition said police fatally shot two protesters in Mombasa, Kenya's Indian Ocean port. Officials could confirm only one death there.

In Kibera, MSF official Ian Van Engelgem told Reuters: "We have seen violence over the last two weeks but today it has really exploded. Young guys -- 13 years -- have died, young women, young men, this is unbelievable ... this is like a massacre."

Odinga visited Masaba hospital and told reporters: "You have seen what we have seen, a shocking thing ... this government is determined to finish anyone who is opposed to what they have done."

Kenya's swift slide into crisis has dented its democratic credentials, horrified world powers, scared off tourists and hurt one of Africa's most promising economies.

A statement by envoys from nine countries including Britain, the Netherlands and Australia, urged Kibaki and Odinga to meet for direct talks without delay or preconditions, and called on Kenya's security forces to show restraint.

"We have seen clear and disturbing footage of the use of lethal force on unarmed demonstrators," it said.

ODM said earlier it would call off street protests after Friday and switch its campaign to small strikes and boycotts of companies run by Kibaki allies.

The insurgency led by dissident general Laurent Nkunda in Congo (DRC) has spelt out its demands at a peace conference to end the conflict in the troubled North and South Kivu provinces in the east, where, according to the UN, insecurity and human rights abuses have displaced at least half a million people in the past 12 months. Nkunda's National Congress for the Defense of the Congolese People (CNDP) demanded talks with the government, the repatriation of Rwandan Hutu rebels active in the country, the return of refugees and the release of political prisoners. (IRIN)

Ethiopia

The UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) has allocated nearly USD 600,000 to provide Ethiopians in the country's strife-torn Somali region with food aid. The funds will be used by the World Food Program (WFP) to help Ethiopian authorities deliver WFP food to the Somali region, where conflict between Government forces and the Ogaden National Liberation Front has intensified this year. To date, WFP has provided almost 17,000 metric tons of food for the five zones under military operations, though it notes that a shortage of military escorts continues to hamper timely deliveries. (UN News)

Ghana

A former U.K. Home Office minister says the case of a terminally ill African woman who was sent home is an issue about "health services in her own country." Cardiff MP Alun Michael said he delayed the removal of Ghanaian Ama Sumani, 39, from the city last year to ensure her status was examined "in great detail." First Minister Rhodri Morgan said the Home Office should re-examine the case and "draw a different conclusion." Sumani, whose visa had expired, cannot afford treatment in Ghana. (BBC)

Ivory Coast

The Security Council renewed the mandate of nearly 8,000 U.N. peacekeeping troops in Ivory Coast for six months on Jan. 16 in a bid to ensure that post-civil war elections are held as planned by mid-year. The 2002-03 war left the West African country, the world's top cocoa producer, divided between a government-held south and rebel-controlled north. But a peace pact last March between the former foes boosted hopes for stability. Rebel leader Guillaume Soro became prime minister in April. (Reuters)

Kenya

Kenyan police battled hundreds of opposition protesters on Jan. 16, killing two, as the opposition defied a ban on rallies against President Mwai Kibaki's disputed re-election, witnesses said. From the western opposition stronghold of Kisumu to the coastal city of Mombasa, in the capital Nairobi and the Rift Valley town of Eldoret, police clashed with gangs of youths, some of whom erected roadblocks and burnt tires. Police in Kisumu shot in the air and used teargas and batons to disperse a 1,000-strong crowd. Two men were shot dead, witnesses said. (Reuters)

Mozambique

Flood waters are continuing to rise in Mozambique, forcing thousands of families to leave their homes to look for refuge in emergency camps. A Save the Children assessment has reported that families are arriving in resettlement camps. They are carrying their belongings and enough food for about 2-3 weeks. But with most of the farm land now under water a shortage of food could soon become a problem. Reports from Caia, from where the relief operation is being coordinated, indicate that thousands of people are on river banks and "islands," and countless houses are under water. (International Save the Children Alliance)

Nigeria

Nigeria plans to set up a new body to monitor suspicious transactions to strengthen its fight against corruption in the public sector, President Umaru Yar'Adua said on Jan. 15. The new body, modeled on similar systems in the US and China, will monitor money flows by sharing information among prosecutors, police and banks, Yar'Adua said. "You must tackle the system and leave no room for people to be tempted," a statement from the presidency quoted Yar'Adua as saying at a meeting with the World Bank Vice President for Africa, Oby Ezekwesili, in Abuja. (Reuters)

Sudan

Since the introduction of a prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission (PMTCT) program in August 2007 at Port Sudan Hospital in Sudan's northeastern Red Sea State, 1,620 pregnant women have received information about HIV and the offer of an HIV test; only 24 have taken up the offer. The numbers are an indication of the long road ahead for Sudan's AIDS prevention efforts. Mother-to-child HIV infection is almost completely preventable - one dose of the antiretroviral (ARV) drug, nevirapine, can halve the chances of a mother infecting her child during delivery. (IRIN)

Uganda

Two weeks after violence erupted in Kenya over a disputed election, refugees are still trickling over the border into Uganda to reverse a tide of thousands that have fled bloodshed in the other direction. The Kenyans joined those waiting for food aid in makeshift camps near the hilly town of Malaba. Officials say around 6,000 refugees have so far crossed into Uganda, from where tens of thousands fled civil war and brutal dictatorship in the 1970s and 80s into Kenya, once regarded as a beacon of stability in the region. (Reuters)

Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe's main opposition said on Jan. 16 it planned a protest next week to demonstrate against a crumbling economy and press for a new constitution it says will guarantee free and fair elections scheduled for March. The MDC secretary general told journalists the opposition had notified the police as required by law and would meet law enforcement agents later on Jan. 16 to discuss the protest march, which has been set for Jan. 23. In other news, the Zimbabwe Women's Resource Center Network says three-quarters of all women on ARV treatment are from urban areas, yet most of those who need it live in rural areas and are often forced to rely on herbal remedies. "If there is not a positive outcome from the Annan intervention, then the EU has agreed that it will seriously review its relations with Kenya. This would include the issue of sanctions," the source said

US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Jendayi Frazer said in a statement that "Both should acknowledge serious irregularities in the vote tallying which made it impossible to determine with certainty the final result,"

she added that "In the meantime, the United States cannot conduct business as usual in Kenya,"

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has also said that "The potential for further bloodshed remains high unless the political crisis is quickly resolved,"

Ms. Frazer also urged the Kenyan government to lift the recent bans on political rallies and live news coverage of the turmoil.

It is not clear how responsive Kenya will be to international pressure, even by the United States, which considers Kenya a close ally and provides it with hundreds of millions of dollars of foreign aid each year.

Ngari Gituku, a spokesman for the president’s party, responded, saying, “We won — clean.”

Salim Lone, a spokesman for Mr. Odinga, said, “We’re very pleased that the United States has so clearly recognized that it will not be possible to do business as usual in Kenya as long as the current crisis generated by the deeply fraudulent election is not resolved.”

The European Union and United States are coordinating their efforts to end the crisis in Kenya, an EU diplomat said.

All political parties in Kenya should recognize that it cannot be business as usual in Kenya until there is political compromise which leads to a lasting solution that reflects the will of the Kenyan people," the EU said in a statement.

"If there is not a positive outcome from the Annan intervention, then the EU has agreed that it will seriously review its relations with Kenya. This would include the issue of sanctions," the source said.

So far, the government and opposition leaders have been recalcitrant and have rebuffed calls to compromise by the African Union, the European Union and several former African presidents. Mr. Kibaki has unilaterally appointed half of the cabinet, which the opposition called a “slap in the face.” He has also brushed aside calls by Kenyan intellectuals, human rights groups and Western diplomats to appoint an independent commission to investigate the election.

Opposition leaders have not backed down from their insistence that negotiations be brokered by a third party, because they say they do not trust the government.

Both sides seem to be only hardening their positions, and opposition leaders have called for three days of nationwide protests next week

Police have banned all demonstrations since President Mwai Kibaki was re-elected in a ballot his rival Raila Odinga says was rigged. After African Union mediation collapsed, Odinga's party vowed to launch protests around the country on Wednesday.

Kenya has been hit by riots and tribal clashes killing some 500 people in two weeks, and the opposition says many of the victims were shot dead by police.

"Kenyan security forces have a duty to rein in criminal violence and should protect people, but they shouldn't turn their weapons on peaceful protesters," Human Rights Watch (HRW) acting Africa director Georgette Gagnon said in a statement.

"The government should make it very clear that police will be held to account for using lethal force against people for simply expressing political views."

The group said its staff had received credible reports that dozens of people were shot dead by police during demonstrations in Odinga's western stronghold of Kisumu.

HRW said the government should allow peaceful protests. The security forces say they only shot determined looters.

The wave of unrest since the ballot, which international observers said was flawed, has dented the democratic credentials of east Africa's biggest economy and shocked world powers.

The United Nations says 250,000 Kenyans have been uprooted by the violence and that half a million will need emergency aid, including food handouts.

Former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan is due in Nairobi this week to lead a new push for peace after AU chairman and Ghanaian President John Kufuor failed to broker a deal.

"PRECIPICE"

But as tensions mounted, the opposition called on Friday for international sanctions against Kibaki's administration.

On Saturday, the European Union and United States warned that there could be "no business as usual" with Nairobi unless a political compromise was agreed that restored stability. Kibaki and Odinga have not met face-to-face since the crisis began.

The top U.S. diplomat for Africa, Jendayi Frazer, said both men should acknowledge serious irregularities in the vote count that made it impossible to know with certainty who had won.

An EU source told Reuters it was too early to talk about sanctions. But the source said that if there was no positive outcome from Annan's mission, the EU would "seriously review" its relations with Kenya, including the issue of sanctions.

Kenya's parliament, where Odinga's Orange Democratic Movement won 99 seats compared to 43 for Kibaki's Party of National Unity, is due to meet to elect a speaker on Tuesday, and that is likely to prove another flashpoint.

Kenyans have been rocked by the turmoil in their country, which has long been a favourite of tourists and seen as a rare island of calm in an often dangerous region.

Mutuma Mathiu, managing editor of the Sunday Nation newspaper, said Kenyans were "dangling on the edge of a precipice", not just because of the planned protests and risk of more ethnic massacres, but because of the capacity for barbarity that many had shown against their neighbours.

"I am horrified beyond measure," he wrote. "My greatest fear is that when the authorities and rescuers have combed every village, they will discover that many, many more people have been massacred in this wave of unspeakable crimes."

Four days after the opening ceremony, a major conference aimed at restoring peace and stability in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo's (DRC) Kivu provinces finally got off the ground on Jan. 9 at the University of the Great Lakes in Goma, with the region's humanitarian "catastrophe" topping the agenda. Civil wars that plagued the country between 1996 and 2003 and continuing clashes in North and South Kivu have, according to the minister of social and humanitarian affairs, led to the deaths of five million people, the internal displacement of six million, and the rape of half a million women. (IRIN)

Guinea

The head of Guinea's employers' federation and religious leaders said they believed a general strike could be averted in the world's top bauxite exporter as talks with union leaders went into a third day. The West African country's powerful unions last week called the general strike from Jan. 3 in protest at President Lansana Conte's dismissal of a member of a consensus government put in place to end unrest almost a year ago. The protests in January and February 2007, which came on the back of a union-led national strike, killed more than 130 people and damaged an already fragile economy. (Reuters)

Kenya

The UN has diverted aid intended for refugees from anarchic Somalia to help Kenya, a country which until less than two weeks ago was widely seen as a bastion of stability in a turbulent region. About 500 people have died and at least 255,000 fled their homes in Kenya since chaos erupted after the disputed Dec. 27 election, leaving aid agencies struggling. Emmanuel Nyabera, spokesman for the UNHCR, said on Jan. 9 the agency would start distributing to families in various parts of Nairobi, where riots and political killings, mostly in the slums, have left many homeless. (Reuters)

Malawi

Malawian civil servants with HIV are to be given a pay rise by the government. Health Minister Marjorie Ngaunjeb said all civil servants affected by the disease would receive an extra USD 35 a month to help them buy more food. "We thought [it] would go a long way in improving their nutritional requirements which are essential to their wellbeing," she told Reuters. Tens of thousands of Malawians die of Aids every year with about 7 percent of the 13 million population infected. Another government official said that the extra money should help those with HIV prolong their lives. (BBC)

Niger

The security forces in Niger defused a second landmine in the capital Niamey on Jan. 9, hours after the director of a private radio station was killed when his vehicle ran over a similar device. The attacks were the first of their kind in the capital since the start of a Tuareg-led rebellion in the former French colony's desert north almost a year ago, an uprising which has mainly targeted army patrols and remote garrisons in the Sahara. (Reuters)

Nigeria

Acts of ocean piracy rose 10 percent in 2007, the first increase for three years, with waters off Nigeria and Somalia topping a list of the world's most dangerous, a ship piracy watchdog said on Jan. 9. The International Maritime Bureau ( IMB ) said in its yearly report that attacks globally on shipping rose to 263 from 239 in 2006. The IMB said armed attacks on merchant ships had increased, with well-armed robbers showing no hesitation in assaulting and injuring crew. Guns were the weapons of choice in 72 attacks - an increase of 35 percent in 2007. (Reuters)

Somalia

Officials with the Libyan embassy in Somalia say two Libyan diplomats kidnapped in the capital, Mogadishu, have been released unharmed. The officials say the two men are back in the embassy and are safe after they were seized earlier Saturday while shopping in the Bakara market, which is a stronghold of Islamists fighting government forces allied with Ethiopian troops. The Islamists have been conducting an Iraq-style insurgency since the joint government forces routed them from their strongholds throughout Somalia last year. The fighting is believed to have killed 6,000 people since then. (VOA)

South Africa

South African business confidence fell to its lowest in more than four years last month as higher interest rates and inflation boosted business costs, the South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry said. The Business Confidence Index declined to 94.8 in December, the lowest since November 2003, from 95.8 in the previous month. The chamber "foresees that 2008 will be economically more difficult than 2007," it said. "The business mood will be affected accordingly" and confidence is likely to continue to moderate in 2008. (Bloomberg)

Sudan

It was rebel forces and not Sudanese government soldiers who attacked a clearly marked UN/African Union supply convoy in Sudan's war-torn Darfur region this week, Sudan's UN ambassador said on Jan. 9. "They were not the government," Ambassador Abdelmahmoud Abdelhalim Mohamed told reporters before a meeting of the U.N. Security Council on the situation in Darfur. He accused the Justice and Equality Movement, a Sudanese rebel group, of carrying out the attack late on Jan. 7. (Reuters)

Zimbabwe

The number of households affected by flooding across southern Africa has risen with widespread destruction of homes and livestock, displacement of families and outbreaks of disease. Flooding in Zimbabwe has continued to generate potentially fatal illnesses in children and adults, with more cases of acute respiratory infection, bilharzias, diarrhea and skin conditions reported. According to a World Vision Zimbabwe assessment team, more people are now suffering malaria and dysentery in flood-affected areas. It is feared that cholera could also be present.
Kufuor, Ghana's president, met President Mwai Kibaki at his State House office and residence, then went to a hotel for talks with Raila Odinga. He was due to meet both again later.

Odinga says he was cheated out of winning the December 27 vote by ballot rigging by Kibaki's supporters. Washington and London have said the vote counting was flawed.

The crisis has dented Kenya's reputation for stability in a turbulent corner of Africa, hurt key economic sectors like tourism and tea, and tainted Kibaki's previous reputation as a gentlemanly leader with a penchant for P.G. Wodehouse novels.

Long used to hosting refugees from hot-spots like Sudan and Somalia, Kenya has more than a quarter of a million of its own people displaced, many victims of inter-ethnic fighting.

In a statement after their meeting, Kibaki's office said the president assured Kufuor he was initiating dialogue and "would continue to reach out to Kenyan leaders."

Kibaki has implied he could bring opposition figures into government and invited Odinga to a face-to-face meeting on Friday. But the opposition leader has declined, saying such a meeting would be a "sideshow" without an international mediator.

Neither Odinga nor Kufuor discussed their meeting publicly.

"Negotiations are at a very sensitive stage ... there will be no diplomacy through the media," an Odinga spokesman said.

Kufuor's spokesman said more talks were planned.

"He (Kufuor) will be doing another round with them today, with both sides," Kufuor's spokesman Andrew Awuni told Reuters.

"When we will be leaving will depend on how the talks go."

Kibaki's naming of 17 ministers late on Tuesday sparked more violence around east Africa's largest economy.

Kenya's main paper, the Daily Nation, said the appointments -- which included a defeated presidential candidate and several figures hated by the opposition -- may "poison the atmosphere".

"It will be seen as a sign of bad faith ahead of the discussions about to begin," the newspaper said.

Within minutes of Kibaki's announcement, hundreds of rioters built burning barricades and stoned cars in Kisumu, a western stronghold of the opposition.

In Nairobi, opposition supporters also came out in the slums, some of them brandishing machetes.

"They are going wild. They are very angry about the new cabinet," said Onyango Apudo, a boxer living in the Mathare shanty-town. At least three people died in the flare-ups.

Kibaki made his first public foray on Wednesday since the vote, visiting refugees in the Burnt Forest area, near Eldoret in west Kenya, one of the areas worst hit by ethnic killings.

Speaking on a hastily erected wooden stage draped in Kenya's national flag, Kibaki told a crowd of several thousand displaced people that he would catch those behind the violence.

"The government will arrest them and charge them in court -- they know who they are," he said, to cheers.

He urged people not to fear "backward, savage people" and promised assistance to rebuild homes and re-start agriculture.

Officials say 486 people have died in election-related violence. But aid workers put the figure at more than 500, and the opposition say the toll could be nearer 1,000 from clashes between police and protesters, ethnic fighting, and looting.

International pressure for a negotiated solution is growing. Possible solutions include power-sharing or fresh elections.

But there is deep distrust between Kibaki and Odinga, a former political prisoner and wealthy business owner who helped Kibaki win a 2002 poll but was sacked from government in 2005.

Stoking opposition ire, Kibaki kept several controversial figures in his new cabinet, including former hardline Internal Security Minister John Michuki who moved to the roads ministry.

Naming Kalonzo Musyoka, who came a distant second in the poll, as vice-president was seen by many as a bid to bring his Kamba tribe on board and prompted some attacks on that group.

The country's police chief, Maj.Gen Ali Mohamed Hussein, said the security situation in Kenya was returning to normal after week-long political unrest.

'The situation in the country is getting back to normal,' Hussein said in a statement issued in the Kenyan capital.

Hussein said his security forces have arrested 1,068 people since Kibaki was declared winner of Dec 27 polls. Among them, 451 have been charged by court.

'Those who were arraigned in court were charged with the offenses of arson, unlawful assembly, conveying suspected stolen goods, handling stolen goods, incitement to violence, robbery with violence, shop-breaking and murder,' he said.

The east African nation has been gripped by ethnic unrest, which began after Raila Odinga, who lost the presidential poll, accused incumbent president Kibaki of rigging last week's elections. Post-election violence has claimed 350 lives in the country and at least a quarter of a million people have been displaced.

Kibaki has said he may form a national unity government, but only if the current unrest ends. Leaders of Odinga's Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party have said they would accept international mediation to settle the current impasse.

International observers have described last week's vote as seriously flawed. Odinga's ODM opposition party has called for new elections. The government said it would accept the proposition, but only if a court orders a new vote.

Warning Kenya was "quickly degenerating into a catastrophe of unimaginable proportions," Wako said both sides should agree on an independent person or body to carry out "a proper tally" of votes from the December 27 poll.

"Such an exercise will go a long way in assuaging the inflamed passions of people," Wako said. But he added that while the tally should help political mediation, only a court could overturn Kibaki's win.

The turmoil has cost some 300 lives and threatens to wreck Kenya's reputation as one of Africa's most promising democracies, strongest economies and favourite tourist destinations.

African Union chair Ghana sought to build consensus around the continent for mediation. The European Union and United States urged both sides to seek a coalition government.

After hours of police clashes with thousands of protesters trying to reach central Nairobi, the opposition called off a planned demonstration in Uhuru (Freedom) Park, saying it wanted to save lives.

But another protest was scheduled for Tuesday.

Shots cracked out as police fired over the heads of protesters and smoke billowed over the city slums.

Flames burst from a large crucifix suspended from the roof of a burning church in Kibera, one of Africa's largest slums, and a hotbed of support for opposition leader Raila Odinga.

Currency and stock trading was halted on Thursday, with the Kenyan shilling and share prices both down about five percent since the troubles began. Tea and coffee auctions were delayed.

From dawn, riot police were out in force as the city, vitually deserted by workers, was slowly transformed into a battleground.

Several columns of protesters surged out of slums towards the city-centre, singing the national anthem, chanting "Peace" and waving twigs and leaves.

When confronted with police lines, they at first sat or kneeled in roads. As tempers rose, they began burning cars and buildings. Police responded with teargas and water cannons.

They fired in the air when the crowd kneeled, shouting "Kill us all", a Reuters witness said.

"DICTATORSHIP"

Demonstrator Julius Akech yelled: "This is dictatorship now."

The daily violence has shocked world leaders and choked supplies of fuel and other goods to a swathe of central Africa.

Pro-Kibaki legislators called for opposition leader Raila Odinga and others to be charged by the International Criminal Court for "ethnic cleansing and genocide".

The opposition has itself charged that a police order to shoot during protests was "bordering on genocide".

Numerous international figures called for reconciliation in a nation previously known as an African peacemaker in Sudan and Somalia, rather than a trouble zone itself.

"This is a country that has been held up as a model of stability. This picture has been shattered," said South African Nobel peace laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu, in Kenya to try to start mediation.

"This is not the Kenya that we know."

Odinga called Kibaki a "thief" who had carried out a civilian coup. But he said he would accept international mediation and proposed setting up an interim power-sharing government to prepare for a re-run of the vote.

"The people will not take this vote-rigging by the government lying down," he said.

Supporters set up barricades on roads around the opposition's "Orange House" headquarters. As opposition leaders left for the rally before it was cancelledt, some police smiled, let them pass and shook fists in a show of solidarity.

In rural areas, the unrest has touched off deep ethnic tensions. In an area where 30 members of Kibaki's Kikuyu tribe were killed in a church torched by a mob, young men with machetes manned roadblocks and hunted for their enemies.

Protesters began to overwhelm police as they tried to enter the centre of Kisumu, an opposition stronghold in western Kenya already ravaged by riots and looting.

Kikuyus, long dominant in politics and business, were targeted in initial clashes, but revenge killings -- including some by the Kikuyu Mungiki criminal gang -- are on the rise.

The government said "well-organised acts of genocide and ethnic cleansing were well planned, financed and rehearsed" by Odinga's Orange Democratic Movement ahead of last week's vote.

Observers said the vote fell short of democratic standards.

Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni became the first African leader to send congratulations to Kibaki. But at the same time, Kampala closed its borders due to the violence.

Hundreds of refugees, however, were allowed to cross into Uganda, taking shelter in schools and churches. Kenyans are more used to taking in refugees from conflict zones in Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia and Uganda.

Kenyan media united in pleas for peace, with every major newspaper running the same front-page headline: "Save Our Beloved Country".

 Comments

UK Kenyans in historic March on Number 10

Diaspora Kenyans living in and around London descended on Number 10 Downing Street to protest the post-election killings that have rocked the country since the ‘secret’ swearing in of President Kibaki after it was evident he had lost to ODM’s Raila Odinga.

ODM had expressed their fears from before the Election Day but this all fell on deaf ears as the Government dismissed the claims terming them propagandist and uncalled for. This has dramatically unfolded on the contrary, with Electoral Commission Chairman, Mr.Samwel Kivuitu, publicly saying he had been coerced into making the announcements by some people from PNU and ODM. “I was put under intense pressure to make the announcement.” Kivuitu said.

Earlier in the day, British Prime Minister, Mr.Gordon Brown, said he had spoken to both Kenya’s new president Mwai Kibaki and the Opposition Leader Raila Odinga and asked them to find an “amicable way of restoring peace”.

“I have already spoken to both president Kibaki and Mr. Raila to come together and restore peace,” he said.

Kenyans in another historical landmark registered the highest voter-turnout ever during the Presidential and Parliamentary elections 5 days ago where it is now emerging that Opposition leader Raila Odinga fraudulently lost to incumbent Mwai Kibaki. “I feel robbed and think it was due to the incompetence of the Electoral Commission under the Chairmanship of Mr. Kivuitu who should have gone home a long time ago. We cannot afford to let the voters down after their massive response and that’s why we shall fight to the end.”

On New Year’s Day, Kenyans in London braved the chilly weather conditions to step out to No. 10 Downing Street to hand in a protest petition under the organisation of Mr. Joram Odus, Jerry N’gwena and Joseph Kasidhi. Speaking outside Number 10 Mr. Kasidhi said they would not stop until the wanton killings of innocent Kenyans has stopped. He decried the continued persecution of Kenyans countrywide such as in Eldoret where nearly 50 died in a church they had sought refuge. While handing the petition to an officer at No. 10, Mr Kasidhi called on the International Community to intervene in the Kenyans situation by appealing to the Human Rights groups, the British Foreign Office, the Prime Minister and EU election watchdog, to intervene.

At Embankment Tube Station, the crowd had begun to gather at around 12noon, Kenyans from all walks of life in and around London then left, for the short walk to Number 10. Among the early birds assembled were; Dr. Patrick Ondire, a General Practioner and a staunch ODM supporter who resides in Peston, Middlesex.

The number swelled to close to 200, carrying placards with messages condemning the anomalies over the presidential vote that ushered in Kibaki for a second term.

It should be noted here that the Kibaki ‘Swearing in Ceremony’ surprisingly included former MPs and Cabinet Ministers; Mr.Musikari Kombo, Mr.Raphael Tuju, Noah Wekesa and Mr.Simeon Nyachae among others who had also lost in the Parliamentary Elections, but appeared spruced up and ready for the ceremony at such ‘short’ notice. Keen observers noted the absence of the Army and Air force Commanders.

It is the sheer arrogance of the Kibaki team who stage managed the swearing in process at such a late hour and in secret that prompted the civil strife that is claiming the lives of innocent civilians either shot by armed police, hunger or cutting each other after being led to believe that one or other tribe was the enemy. The death toll has so far risen to more than 270. Most of those who have lost their lives are from ODM strongholds of Western, Nyanza and Rift Valley provinces

Latest reports indicate close to 50 civilians, who had gone for refuge in a church in Eldoret- Rift Valley, were killed. Elsewhere

Chants of “No To Kibaki, No Dictatorship,”

“No Poll Rigging in Kenya, Kibaki Should Go Away” and

“We Want Democracy in Kenya” complimented the hand-written placards carried by the demonstrators at No. 10 Downing Street.

British Metropolitan Police were very helpful and appeared real keen on the Kenyan demonstrators with some saying they never thought they would see Kenyans here as they have always thought of Kenya as a safety haven of Africa. Most of all they enjoyed the sing-along of the Kenya National Anthem along with the popular tune ‘Jambo, Jambo Bwana – Kenya Hakuna Matata’ – (in both Swahili and English) only this time the variance was – IKO MATATA!

Another placard of interest was the one in Swahili reading,”Raila Juu, Kibaki Chini,” making a statement for the rigged out ODM presidential candidate.

An angry protester, carrying a placard written, “No Dictatorship to Kenya, Let Democracy Prevail” never hesitated to add; “Resign and Stop killing innocent Kenyans.” Another protester called on Mr.Kibaki to accept defeat and resign to let Democracy Prevail if he loved Kenya.

Sympathetic tourists in Britain, both English and foreigners also paraded with the angry chanting Protesters who included men, women and children as young as 3, opposite Downing Street on Whitehall Street. A Mr. Abramovich accompanied by his wife from the Russian Federation, said from what he had gathered on the ongoing news, he was disappointed with the way things were turning out in Kenya. ”I think the election results were not fair but I do thank the voters who turned up for the elections,” he said.

A German tourist passing by, said he had been in Kenya in the 70s and had enjoyed himself immensely, “I am saddened by what I am seeing in the news, killing of women and children that is not African, or is it these days? The Western World should be able to do something to stop all that rubbish.”

Other procession protests are planned for the two coming Saturdays 5th and 12th January 2008 respectively. It is expected that the protesters will march from the Kenya High Commission in Portland Street to Number Ten Downing Street from 12 Noon.

Modi has asked Dr. Manmohan Singh to take up the issue with the Kenyan Government to ensure safety of Gujaratis in Kenya.

In his letter, Modi voiced concern over the safety of about 400 Gujaratis who have taken shelter in a Swaminarayan temple in Kisumu, a town located in Western part of Kenya.

"I request the Indian Government to immediately beef up security for our Indian brothers in Kenya. Indian youth in Kenya who want to return should be brought back, and if required through the sea route or they should be taken to Nirobi and arrangements made for their stay there. Since their houses have been burnt, missing documents must be overlooked and they should be allowed to move to safer areas without any hitch, keeping in mind their Indian blood," said Modi.

Ever since post-election riots broke out in Kenya, the Gujarati diaspora has been living in fear.

Hundreds of Gujarati businessmen have taken shelter in a temple in the Kenyan town of Kisumu after the violence.

Offices and factories belonging to Gujaratis had been looted and their houses attacked by residents.

With defeated Kenyan presidential challenger Raila Odinga sticking to his guns after an allegedly rigged election and freshly re-elected President Mwai Kibaki vowing to assert his authority, the east African nation is locked in a crippling crisis.

Scores of people were killed and several thousand have fled after President Mwai Kibaki was declared the winner in a disputed election. The estimated death toll has risen to about 250 till today.

Police beat protesters and flushed looters out of buildings in Nairobi's Kibera slum, which is within opposition leader Raila Odinga's constituency.

Kenyan opposition supporters burnt houses in Nairobi's Korogocho slum as police fired teargas and shots in the air to disperse the crowd.

Much of the fighting pitched Luos, who support opposition leader Raila Odinga, against Kibaki's ethnic Kikuyu group.

There are about 43,000 Gujaratis in Nairobi and about 3,000 in Kisumu.
